As the Brexit negotiations inch forward, there is an increasing number of voices suggesting that it will be necessary for non-EU nationals to have a Carte de Sejour in order to remain in France.

This obviously means us Brits.

We have personally applied for these cards and you might consider doing the same. The waiting time is already over a year in many Départements, however it does seem that at least being in the queue - i.e. having an appointment - is a worthwhile and free step to take.

Each Prefecture has their own process. Check the Prefecture website to see what is needed or contact us for advice. Most currently have a waiting list for rendez-vous. Next start to assemble your dossier of required documents. This includes such things as birth, marriage and divorce certificates and all will need to be officially translated. All this and more needs to be presented, along with the originals, on the day of your appointment.

We have been very competently assisted in our applications by a company called Formation Plus who have assessed our situations, contacted the Prefecture, provided quotes from registered translators, checked our dossiers and accompanied the visit where required. It’s an English-speaking, paid-for service and has saved us hours of work and given us the reassurance that all would be in order on the day of our appointment.

An honest estate agent will be open about the fact that they have a somewhat vested interest in your sale or purchase proceeding to completion. After all, no sale, no fee. Few amongst us would put our own interests ahead of the life-changing decisions you face, but we understand why some people might think we would.

Mortgages

Talk to a French bank, in English (or in French!), for a quick in-principle guide to your suitability for a loan. Or to an international broker - in one of several languages. We are happy to advise which is the most sensible route to pursue in any given circumstance.

Currency Exchange

Few among us would buy anything without knowing the price. Yet when we mention currency exchange, we know it can sound as if we are ‘selling’ a financial add-on. If you are changing currency, you’ll need to ……change your currency. Typically, this is Sterling to Euros or vice-versa. The rate you get will affect the price you pay or receive. It’s obvious when you pause to think about it - which many of us didn’t………….

There is no way around it, but there are choices. Your bank will charge you a lot of money for this service. Currency specialists typically charge a lot less. They can because it is their specialism and they trade currency in enormous volumes.

 Utilities

We’ll be with you every step of the way to your new home. At legal completion we’ll help you transfer the utilities into your name.
At this time we will agree meter readings in preparation for transfer of utilities (lifted from Lifecycle), (and agree any inventories made earlier.)
Most companies will not allow us to actually do this for you.
